LEGO® Therapy

Autism Advisory Adelaide is now offering Lego Therapy. Guided by a trained Lego Therapy Facilitator, individuals will learn a myraid of social and communication skills whilst being able to engage in play-based learning.
What does a session look like?

The session is split into 2, typically equal, parts- Therapy and Free Build. Total run time is typically 1.5 hours.


To start off the session we have our special Lego kit which can only be used during the first half of the session (Therapy). It is bright and colourful and has all the pieces to build multiple small builds. Children transition through different roles during this stage to practise different types of communication skills.

The next half of the session is Free Build. Free build is such an integral part of therapy, like the above, as it gives us a glimpse of how social and communication strategies are being used outside of the structure of the first half of the session. It also keeps Therapy really fun, which is what we want for our individuals. Lego Therapy is play-based, and child-led. Free build gives them the autonomy to explore their interests more- whether that be through use of their own Lego or the kits we bring along with us.

Who is best suited to Lego Therapy?

Lego Therapy is best suited to individuals aged 5- years-old and up.


Our Participants usually have a natural interest in Lego and can explain the parts of a kit to those around them- with training if needed (using colour, size, shape, number of dots etc).


Participants will also need to have at least a 5 to 10-minute attention span for Lego to complete their delegated role before swapping over.

What are the benefits?

Lego Therapy is an evidence-based, social communication program developed by Daniel LeGoff in the early 2000's. It is a child-led, gentle way of helping develop social communication skills whilst utilising the individuals strengths.

Throughout the program, the facilitator will guide the participant to naturally pay attention to social and communication cues. So far, evidence is suggesting the program has positive impacts on;
